Agency Spotlight: Scottsdale Police Department

Agency Spotlight: Scottsdale Police Department

Officer Michelle Mitchell has served with the Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) for 18 years, including the past 10 as a School Resource Officer (SRO) at all five Scottsdale Unified School District high schools and several middle schools. After working patrol in Old Town Scottsdale, she discovered her passion for supporting youth.

At Cocopah Middle School, she noticed many students found police officers intimidating. To build trust, she began coaching cross country to form strong relationships and help students see officers as supportive resources. As trust grew, students opened up and began turning to her for guidance.

A part of the partnership between Youth & Family Services and SPD is the Restorative Justice Intervention Program (RJIP). This program provides an alternative to the traditional court system. Referred students complete courses in decision-making, life skills and substance use education, along with community service. "This approach allows students to learn from their mistakes without carrying a court record," Officer Mitchell says. "It's about helping them grow, not just punishing them."

Officer Mitchell, thank you for all you do for the Scottsdale community!
