Scottsdale Public Library
January 2023

Library Director Update

Greetings valued library patrons,

Scottsdale Public Library is looking forward to a bright 2023 and we can't wait for you and your family and friends to benefit from the dedicated service we enjoy providing to the community.

As we prepare for the opportunities of a new year, I’d like to share a few significant topics facing public libraries today.

Banned books and challenges to library collections is an area that has gained momentum in some areas of our country. Most of these challenges are relative to LGBTQ+ material and library displays. Scottsdale Public Library follows the Library Bill of Rights, recognizing that freedom of access is fundamental in public library service.

Circulation trends in public libraries are in flux because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Library leadership is paying close attention to the data, what library patrons want and how they are accessing the collection either in person or through electronic resources. During the pandemic electronic use was up, but when library branches opened back up, the circulation of physical items surpassed electronic check outs.

The Scottsdale Public Library will soon launch an updated Strategic Plan that is forward thinking and action oriented. The library is thrilled to be welcoming back volunteers, and will continue its innovative programming, collection development and outreach.

The mission of Scottsdale Public Library is to "Put People at the Heart of Dynamic Library Services." The library team in Scottsdale is remarkable and prioritizes the mission in their day-to-day library work throughout the year. Each of the four library branches, Civic Center, Mustang, Arabian and Appaloosa, each offer something special for the community and at the heart of this library system is excellent customer service for all library patrons.

On behalf of Scottsdale Public Library, Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
Kira Peters
Director - Scottsdale Public Library

Birdies for Charity

Join the Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library

In partnership with Thunderbird Charities, The Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library is once again participating in Birdies for Charity. This fundraiser works just like a walk-a-thon, where you pledge a fixed amount (e.g. $.05) for every birdie scored during the 2023 WM Phoenix Open from Feb. 6 - 12. In 2022, a total of 1,422 birdies were made at the tournament. This is a great way to support your local library as the Thunderbirds absorb all fees and provides a 10% bonus for donations once $500 is reached in pledges.

To make your pledge, visit birdiesforcharityaz.com and select Friends of the Scottsdale Public Library as your charity. Pledges must be made by 5 p.m. Feb. 13.
