Nov. 28, 2022 HEADLINE NEWS Licensing for short-term/vacation rental properties opens. The Scottsdale City Council unanimously adopted Scottsdale Ordinance 4655 in October, requiring rental property owners/operators to obtain a Scottsdale license for each property and comply with several safety, health and neighbor notification requirements. Owners of existing short-term/vacation rental properties must obtain licenses by Jan. 8, 2023. New short-term/vacation rental properties must also comply with ordinance requirements and be licensed before being offered for rent in Scottsdale. The annual license fee is $250 per property; fees will go 100 percent to cover costs associated with licensing vacation and short-term rentals. Scottsdale’s ordinance complies with Arizona Senate Bill 1168 passed by the legislature and signed by the governor in July, and reflects the full authority granted to cities under state law. Review the requirements and apply for a Scottsdale rental property license at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “short-term rental.” Scottsdale Fire will participate in a $4 million grant to address occupational-related cancer. The University of Arizona will lead the study in partnership with the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association and Arizona State University. The research will test the effectiveness of whether blood or plasma donations lower cancer-causing “forever chemicals” levels. Firefighters encounter these substances in many ways, including burning household items, potential contamination from personal protective equipment and firefighter foam, which is used to put out burning liquids. Firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population. Learn more. Tonight! Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts presents “BODYTRAFFIC,” a unique dance company displaying a mixed repertoire of creative expression. The dance company was founded 15 years ago and was selected by the Obama Administration to be a part of DanceMotionUSA, which strives to engage international audiences through captivating performances. Get more events information. PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Donate unwrapped toys and gift cards at the Scottsdale Fire Department headquarters or any fire station through Tuesday, Dec. 21. Donations are distributed to partner organizations who serve families in need. Donors are asked to consider buying gifts for children 7-18 years old, as this age group is more challenging to buy for than younger ones. Registration for Scottsdale Parks and Recreation winter programs is open for Scottsdale residents, and it will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, for nonresidents. FYI After an extensive search, the city of Scottsdale has hired Monica Boyd to lead its Human Resources Department. She has over 20 years of experience with the city of Phoenix, including more than 10 of those in senior-level human resources management. She currently serves as the deputy human resources director managing the Organizational Support and Leave Management Programs division. Her first day on the job in Scottsdale is Dec. 12. Boyd holds degrees from Arizona State University – a Master’s of Public Administration and bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Business and Psychology. She earned her Society for Human Resource Management-Certified Professional designation and certification in workplace mediation. Investing in Our Scottsdale: Gateway Monument Replacement Project underway. Residents and visitors entering Scottsdale will soon be welcomed with new gateway markers. In early 2020, residents voted on five concepts, and they selected the one created by Moazam Khan and William Lester from MoD a+p. The design includes a combination of natural materials with contemporary forms which represents the integration of the old with the new and the harmony of nature with the built environment. The markers initially will be built in 11 locations and replace existing ones. Work begins in mid-December and will be completed the end of January. Get details. Marathon may cause traffic delays. More than 950 runners are expected to participate in the 30th annual Scottsdale Half Marathon & 5K 6 a.m.-noon Sunday, Dec. 4. Roads will remain open, with minimal traffic restrictions.
